One of MSVS's Consultants, Dana Colman is a survivor of Ovarian Cancer.
Dana's Story - Dana admits that prior to her diagnosis, she had never heard anyone else being diagnosed with this type of cancer. She was lucky enough to discover the cancer before it spread to any of her major organs, and through the “slash and burn” technique (surgery and chemotherapy), she was given the all clear 18 months ago. Dana is continuing to grow back her fabulous head of hair!
Unfortunately, we now also have another staff member recently diagnosed who is currently going through her treatment.
There needs to be more community awareness for Ovarian Cancer, and research into early detection and causes, as everyone can be affected.
Ovarian cancer is an insidious disease, often known as a “silent-killer” as symptoms are vague and often strike without warning. Unlike many other cancers there is no early detection test. Consequently ovarian cancer is often diagnosed in its late stages and only 20%-30% of women survive beyond five years as compared to an 80-100% survival rate when detected early.
The Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation (OCRF) is Australia’s pre-eminent ovarian cancer research body. Their goal is to raise awareness and vital funds for the development of an early detection test that will save women’s lives. The Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation receive no government funding and rely on the support of community and business supporters to assist in driving research forward.
To help raise money, Dana plans to wear a dress every day in October, and to host a Frocktober afternoon tea with her work colleagues to help raise more awareness and vital funds.
